My Practicum Placement

My first placement was at G. A. Wheable Center for Adult Education.

I was lucky because I was placed into both of my teachables, science (SNC2D) and biology (SBIO3U).

In 1985, Wheable was converted from a conventional high school to become the first Adult Learning Centre in London. Two years later they reformed into an adults-only day school. The classes are three hours long, from 9:30AM to 4:00PM with nigh classes available. They also offer a range of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to help immigrant students to the language proficiency to enter the other grade 9-12 classes.

As you might think, these classes didn't run as a usual class. In order to give me teaching time, my associate teacher split the 3 hour class into two 1.5 hour classes with a short break in between. I was able to teach one of these class halves, and was able to teach a whole unit in both the SNC2D class and the SBIO3U. In SNC2D I taught the biology unit on cells and tissues. In the SBIO3U class I taught the plants unit, which I was extremely happy with since my major in university was Plant Science.
